Employee Appreciation!

Why not let the month of September be Employee Appreciation Month? Each day find a way to say thank you for the incredibly hard work they do for you and your organization. For some you will need a road map to get started .. below you will find 30 things you can do to thank your staff and motivate them to a greater level of performance. You can do them in order; combine some of the ideas or as appropriate. The main goal is to do at least one of these activities every day in the month of September! Thereafter, it will be part of your genetic makeup and you will find yourself looking for ways to let your employees know how much you appreciate them.and guess what . as the leader goes so will the team. You will begin to notice how your employees will begin to appreciate each other as well. Good luck and thank you for being so faithful in your support towards CGI!

September 1

Post a thank you note on each of your direct reports desk - make it personal so that they know you are being sincere!

September 2

Leave a voice mail for your entire organization, expressing how much they have contributed to the organization meeting its strategic objectives by completing those hard initiatives (name the initiatives)

September 3

Create an awards program surrounding idea generation . Throughout the month, give a shiny new penny for an innovative thought which is  shared.at the end of the month celebrate all the great ideas and the ones with the most pennies

September 4

When you hear a positive remark about someone, repeat it to that person as soon as possible (Face-to-face is best, voice mail is good .. use email if you are in a pinch).  REMEMBER they really will want to see and hear your enthusiasm!!!

September 5

When you hear a positive remark about your team - ensure you let your entire team know as well . don't wait until the next "All Hands Meeting" do it as soon as possible (voice mail or video mail)!

September 6

Instead of eating in your office - join your employees in the cafeteria and let them see the personal side of you! If you can - buy them lunch! Your role during this time is to listen, listen, listen and thank them for their great work!

September 7

Conduct an off-site workshop, selecting high performers, at all levels, their goal is to develop a creative solution to a problem/issue your group is experiencing. They will be so honored that you selected and trusted them to develop a solution - to make this work - remember to implement the solution and after the implementation, brag about this group!

September 8

Encourage employees to identify specific areas of interest in job-related skills. Then arrange for them to spend a day with an in-house "expert" to learn more about the topic. I did this with one of my secretaries . she went on to become a Vice President in this area of special interest for a Fortune 1000 company!!

September 9

Acknowledge individual achievements by using employee names in status reports.

September 10

Use 3x5 cards to write "You're special because." statements. People can collect the cards and refer to them when things aren't going perfectly.

September 11

Pop in at the first meeting of a special project team and express your appreciation for their involvement.

September 12

Acknowledge and celebrate birthdays.

September 16

Have a bring your favorite dish luncheon and ask your boss (or other senior leadership member) to come and thank the group for their efforts

September 17

Recognize employees who actively serve the community.

September 18

Have a project team share with the organization the results (strategic impact) of the implementation of their project

September 19

When someone has spent long hours at work, send a letter of thanks to his/her home.

Purchase a unique coin to serve as a memento of team membership.  Make it a game in that in being a part of this team, they should have this coin with them at all times. When the team is at an outing, any team member can pull out their coin and all other team members must pull theirs out . who ever doesn't have their coin buys ice cream for everyone (or buys whatever is relevant for the outing)!

September 29

Get out of your office and let people know how great they are and how honored you are that they choose every day to be a part of your team!

September 30
